OpenAI rolled back its latest chatbot update because, apparently, it got too nice. Too flattering. Too eager to please. Like the kid in school who told the teacher they loved homework — and meant it. We’ve built an oracle that tells us we’re always right. A “yes machine” dressed up as intelligence. But let’s not kid ourselves. We didn’t accidentally make the machine sycophantic. We trained it that way. We rewarded politeness over precision. Applause over accuracy. We didn’t want answers. We wanted affirmation.
Meanwhile, the tech world keeps marching — no, sprinting — forward. China builds math wizards that prove theorems at superhuman scale. Meta launches AI friends who learn our moods, mine our habits, and whisper affirmations in our digital ears. Microsoft brags their AI writes 30% of their code, which explains a few recent bugs, doesn't it?
And TikTok? Now the second-biggest livestreaming platform in the world. Because who needs substance when you can have streams of attention, monetized in real-time?
But here’s the kicker: we keep calling this progress.
We talk about “digital ecosystems” and “cloud sovereignty” as if they’re noble crusades — when most of it’s about control, money, and manufacturing consent through code. The real question isn’t whether AI is too flattering. It’s whether we’re too addicted to being flattered.
So yes, let’s fix the chatbot. Dial down the dopamine. Make it disagree again.
